I have always wanted to be a teacher, but I didn't realize how much would be expected of me! Through my coursework, I have learned the true meaning of what it means to be a professional teacher. I have attended educator conferences and been exposed to professional development and leadership opportunities that have motivated me to be a leader.
Our teacher candidates develop master teaching skills in content and pedagogy as they progress through each transition point in the EPP curriculum. Through careful guidance and a finely developed process, TSU teacher candidates know and understand best practices. Over 95 percent of our teachers go on to pass their teacher certification exams.

Program Semesters/Steps Overview
Apply and become admitted to the College of Education
In the fall semester, you will take content block courses to learn more about the content area you want to teach and the associated instructional methods in that content area. You will also take the education certification course, where you will receive testing support from area teachers and consultants.
In the spring semester, you will participate in your first school-based internship. During this internship, you will observe teachers at different sites. At the same time, you will take courses on ESL methods and early childhood practices.
Your final year is a year-long clinical experience. In the fall semester, you take courses and are in the field (at a school site) two times a week. Before the spring semester, we celebrate you by hosting an official ceremony where you take a pledge and receive a school of education sweater.
In the spring semester you will be a full-time student-teacher at two different placements within your certification area.
Program Hallmarks
Hands-on experience is a critical part of our teacher preparation program. Throughout their time at TSU, students will participate in a school-based internship, where they will observe teachers at different sites, and a year-long clinical experience.
Beyond these hands-on experiences, we also provide multiple opportunities to interact with, and provide positive impact on, students in the Houston area through our Association of Teacher Professional Education (ATPE). Through this program, teacher candidates put on outreach programs for students in the community, such as conferences for at-risk middle school students, college-access workshops and a book swap in partnership with the Barbara Bush Foundation.
