Pivotal years of development

Brain development happens first, and fast, with 90% of a child’s brain beginning to develop in the first five years. Both Dr. Allen and Jamal agree that this is a crucial time for a child’s development, socially and academically. That’s where early childhood educators step in. 

Early educators  lay the foundation for essential skills, such as language development, social and emotional skills and executive functioning – all of which can predict a variety of milestones, from school readiness to long-term health outcomes. Jamal speaks to the importance of children being developmentally ready before academic learning, and emphasizes the need to grow in a space where they can feel seen, safe and valued.

Early impact is lasting impact

Early childhood educators make an impression on a child right from the start. As an early childhood educator, you play a key role in shaping the future for that generation. Jamal recalled a video campaign titled "Where Are They Now?" in which students who attended early childhood programs shared their successes ten years later.  These students were succeeding in their academics, becoming top students in their grade,  and some even mentioned wanting to be teachers– proving how influential educators can be at every stage!

Classrooms that reflect the community 

“An investment in every child is an investment in society,” Jamal stated, as he opened up the discussion on the necessity of providing the community with an early childhood education classroom that mirrors the families within it. 

It’s crucial that when a student walks into a classroom, they see themselves, even in those early years. “They know that they don’t have to change who they are to belong,” said Dr. Allen as she recalled how impactful it is to meet the needs of all students.

This includes having teachers who reflect the linguistic and cultural backgrounds of students—and it includes having more men as teachers! 

A Space for Support and Growth

You will always be working alongside another educator, and this is a critical time to build relationships that better the classroom experience. Support roles such as mentor teachers continuously connect and reflect with you, and where there is support, there is confidence and value.

Working in these settings also comes with its challenges, such as emotional, relational and behavioral issues, along with family dynamics and developmental needs that educators must address. That can be a lot on your shoulders! This is where Jamal emphasizes the need to incorporate reflective practice as a daily routine. 

Reflective practice is a way to take time to take a step back in a protective, supportive space and process the day. Start by asking questions like, “Why did that moment feel so hard for me?” and “What does that behavior actually mean?” This process helps you analyze your day to learn and improve. It builds intentionality and professional confidence, which builds better teachers!
