Houston ISD, with more than 214,000 students and encompassing 333 square miles within greater Houston, is the seventh largest public school system in the nation and the largest in Texas. Approximately 62 percent of the students are Hispanic, 24 percent are African-American and the other ethnicities making up the remaining percentages. The student population in over 280 schools is approximately 75 percent economically disadvantaged.
Houston ISD is a two-time Broad Prize of Urban Education recipient, the home of nationally recognized Blue Ribbon Schools and has 21 schools included on U.S. News and World Report’s Best High Schools. With signature programs and schools with unprecedented connections to corporations in Houston, our schools are preparing students to enter the global workforce. Our specialty campus programs include Montessori, STEM, International Baccalaureate, Early College High Schools, fine arts, medicine, dual language and language immersion programs. Innovative career pathways are offered at 37 high schools that include: aviation technology, financial planning, robotics, engineering, nursing and veterinary science. We are committed to preparing students for the world.
