About

Trinity is a private liberal arts university located in the heart of San Antonio, with over 150 years of experience providing quality education and shaping important leaders. Two of Trinity’s main goals are clear in its teacher preparation program: developing leaders with strong character and making a positive difference in the San Antonio community.
A key idea in Trinity’s teacher preparation program is that good teachers are always learning—about children, how they learn and how to teach well. Teaching is called “the learning profession” because teachers keep growing by asking questions throughout their careers. Instead of just giving information for students to memorize, teachers listen to understand their students’ thinking. Students also ask questions and explain their ideas as they solve real problems.

Program Info

Trinity’s Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a 32-hour graduate program known nationwide for its hands-on and innovative approach to preparing teachers. It combines graduate classes with a full-year internship that leads to your initial Texas teaching certificate.

The MAT program lasts three semesters and is organized into two groups, or cohorts: one for secondary (middle and high school) and one for elementary education. It starts in the summer and continues through the fall and spring. The year-long internship gives you plenty of real classroom experience, building on what you learned in undergrad classes, internships, research and service projects. The graduate courses are designed to help you prepare for and understand your time in the classroom.

This program prepares you to teach for deeper learning by:

  • Personalizing learning to fit students’ needs and development
  • Connecting lessons to real-life situations
  • Helping students apply skills in new ways
  • Creating supportive classroom communities
  • Building fair and welcoming learning environments
