About

Now in its sixth decade, the University of Hartford (UHart) sits proudly on a 350-acre main campus that includes parts of Hartford, West Hartford and Bloomfield. It provides a beautifully landscaped vista with grassy expanses and wooded areas with a branch of the Park River winding through it.

Despite its bucolic setting and relatively small size, UHart offers a dynamic student experience charged with diversity in its programs, activities, and student body. International and U.S. students of color comprise 43 percent of all undergraduates.

At the University of Hartford, students pursue a wide range of interests and talents. They are dance team members who major in accounting, division basketball players who study biomedical engineering, and health science majors who teach English in Ecuador and plan to join the Peace Corps.

Alumni include Broadway and film actors, opera standouts, internationally known artists and musicians, professional all-star athletes, successful business entrepreneurs, award-winning teachers and nurses, engineers who make groundbreaking discoveries and doctors who are leaders in their fields.

The University of Hartford provides a robust, distinctive educational experience for its more than 4,000 undergraduate and 1,700 graduate students. Distinguished faculty provide rigorous instruction as well as research, performance and internship opportunities in more than 100 degree programs in the arts, humanities, business, education, health, and engineering and technology professions. With students from 48 states and 63 countries, we are a university for the world.

Program Info

The College of Education, Nursing, and Health Professions offers programs in early childhood education and elementary education.

Our Early Childhood Education (ECE) program provides students with the knowledge and training to pursue a variety of careers in public and private schools, as well as childcare centers and community programs. The program prepares students to teach and care for children in inclusive learning environments from birth to age eight. The program offers rigorous professional preparation through core theory, site-based observations, real-world fieldwork experiences and two student-teaching semesters in area schools. The degree leads to diverse early childhood careers or Connecticut teacher certification with a focus in birth to age five or pre-kindergarten to third grade.

Our bachelor's degree program in elementary education prepares you for exciting teaching careers in elementary schools and is focused on best practices in pedagogy to teach all major content areas in literacy, math, science and social studies. Students who successfully complete the elementary education undergraduate program, specified Praxis II examination(s) and Connecticut Foundations of Reading Test are eligible, on recommendation of the University, for Connecticut certification to teach grades 1-6.
