During the Spring enrollment period, you’ll complete a special course in Canvas that explains how the program works, what’s expected and important teaching skills. You’ll get your program books and start reading to get ready for the summer program.

You’ll also be encouraged to visit great teachers in the district and join optional welcome sessions to learn more.

Before the summer starts, it’s a good idea to prepare for and take a teaching licensure test. The program helps by paying for one month of access to 240tutoring, an online program that creates personalized study plans to help you get ready based on your strengths and needs.

During the six-week Summer Program, you’ll take part in online classes and in-person training to build important teaching skills and knowledge. These courses follow North Carolina’s teaching standards.
You’ll also complete:

• Five days of reading training
• Five days of math training
• Two days of training on building positive classroom relationships
• One day of arts integration training

To move on to the school-year program, you’ll need to pass a performance test and qualify for a residency teaching license.

During the school year, you’ll keep taking online courses focused on your teaching license. You’ll also attend weekly in-person classes where you’ll learn how to:

• Teach in ways that meet each student’s needs
• Use proven teaching strategies
• Use data to help students succeed
• Support students dealing with trauma
• Create personalized learning plans
• Plan, teach and assess for student growth

This program is designed to help you grow through hands-on learning and reflection. You won’t just learn teaching strategies—you’ll think about how to use them in your own classroom right away.

You’ll also have chances to connect with experienced teachers and leaders across the district. These relationships can support you, help you build a strong classroom community and ease the stress that many new teachers feel.

Throughout the program, you’ll also build important skills through social-emotional learning and adult learning strategies—so you’re not just prepared to start teaching, but to keep growing in your career.
