When current events offer an opportunity to engage students in real-time learning, you take it. Especially when you’re a quick-thinking teacher like high school social studies teacher David Wiltz.
The Los Angeles Times covered David’s classroom the morning President Trump announced the phasing out of the DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) program.

David led his juniors, some of them special education students, to filter out the gunk stirred up by the public rumor mill. Instead, he encouraged them to research the facts, discuss what they'd found, and share how this news affects people in their lives. Through thoughtful research and dialogue, they worked together to transform anxiety into awareness.
“...it’s very important to know about our current events. The one thing we need to understand is what it is versus what people are freaking out about.” – David Wiltz
