The Bethany Literacy Clinic
As an Education major at Bethany, you’ll be part of meaningful, hands-on work from early in your college experience. Through Bethany’s on-campus literacy clinic, you’ll gain real-world teaching practice by working one-on-one with children from the community. You’ll apply what you’ve learned in class, help kids improve their reading and writing skills, and see their progress firsthand. The Bethany Literacy Clinic
Bethany Lutheran College’s literacy clinic provides free, research-based literacy interventions to local children. These sessions are led by Education students—called coaches—who are trained and supervised by the college’s Education program staff. Pre- and post-assessment data shows that students who participate in the clinic make measurable gains in their literacy development. Learn more. 

Bethany’s education program emphasizes the importance of gaining as much classroom experience as possible. As a future teacher, you’ll have many opportunities to work directly with students and teachers, including:

• 16 hours of early field experience, where you’ll assist an experienced teacher in the classroom.
• 25 hours in a middle or junior high classroom, tutoring students and supporting the teacher.
• About 18 weeks of teaching practice, where you’ll plan and teach lessons in subjects like language arts, math, science, social studies, health, physical education, music and art on consecutive days.
• A three-week placement focused on teaching children with special needs, under the guidance of a special education teacher.
• A final semester-long teaching internship, where you’ll take on full-time teaching responsibilities. Recent internships have been in Mankato and nearby communities such as Nicollet, Janesville, Madelia, Mapleton, Jordan, Good Thunder, Faribault, St. Clair, St. James, St. Peter, Albert Lea and Waterville.
