"The future of education isn't going to be less human," said Guillermo Carmona, director of communications at Gadsden Independent Schools in New Mexico. "It's going to be more human."
That's not wishful thinking.
It's where the data points. Every few months a headline declares artificial intelligence is coming for teaching jobs, but the actual research tells a more nuanced story.
No credible labor-market analysis projects AI fully replacing teachers. What analysts do project is a shift in what the job looks like. And for people considering teaching right now, that shift is worth understanding.

The short answer is no. But the job is changing.
The World Economic Forum's “Future of Jobs Report 2025” projects education roles to grow 15- to 25 percent through 2030, even as AI automates work in other sectors. (1) McKinsey's 2025 AI adoption research found less than five percent of occupations can be fully automated with current AI technology. (2)
Teaching isn't close to that threshold, and the reason comes down to what the job actually requires.
AI can grade a multiple- choice quiz. It can generate a lesson plan. It can flag a student who's falling behind based on test scores.
What it can't do is notice that a kid who's been quiet all week is dealing with something at home. It can't read a room and adjust on the fly. It can't make a student believe in themselves. Those aren't soft extras. They're the core of what teachers do every single day.
There's a reason classrooms exist. People learn differently when other people are in the room.
Psychologist Albert Bandura's social learning theory suggests people learn largely by watching, interacting with and getting real-time feedback from others — not just by receiving information.
A chatbot can explain a concept, but it can't read a confused face, adjust mid-sentence or model how to handle frustration the way a present adult can. (3)
The pandemic gave us an unintentional large-scale test of what happens when that human element is removed.
The Harvard GSE/Stanford SIEPR Education Recovery Scorecard found the average U.S. public school student in grades 3 through 8 lost roughly half a year of math learning and a quarter of a year in reading during pandemic remote schooling. (4) Affected students recovered only 20-30 percent of that lost ground in the first year, and progress largely plateaued for years afterward.
Schools didn't simply bounce back.
The data points to something specific: Screen-based instruction, even well-designed, couldn't replicate what in-person teachers provide. That finding matters a lot when evaluating how much of teaching AI could realistically absorb.
Carmona's framing, that education is becoming more human and not less, captures something the job statistics alone don't fully convey:. The parts of teaching that matter most are exactly the parts AI is worst at replicating.
A teacher who makes a student believe they're capable of something they didn't think they could do isn't delivering content. They're doing something relational. Something that comes from being known and believed in by a specific person.
That's not something any app or algorithm can replicate, however sophisticated.
Teachers notice things a system can't measure: a student who's acting differently, a family situation affecting focus, a spark of interest outside the curriculum.
Carmona calls this being "student-centric," and it's what the job looks like day to day, beyond lesson plans and test scores.
Teachers respond in real time to what's happening locally and globally — from community events to current issues to shifts in school culture — in ways an AI tool can't. That's live, responsive guidance. Not a fixed curriculum output.
Teachers attend school events and get to know families in ways that build trust entirely outside the classroom. That presence and community membership has no AI equivalent. It's also one of the reasons families choose schools the way they do.
If you've been holding off on teaching because you're worried AI will hollow out the job, the evidence points the other way.
AI may take on more of the administrative and repetitive load, like grading, scheduling and data entry, which would free teachers to spend more time on exactly the work described above. The job isn't shrinking. The most valuable parts of it are becoming more central.
Teaching is consistently ranked among the roles least exposed to full automation by labor-market researchers including McKinsey and the WEF. (1)(2) The core value of the job, relationships, real-time judgment, mentorship and presence, is exactly what current AI tools can't replicate.
That doesn't mean the job is easy. It means it's durable.
